PRP Injections Q&A

What are PRP injections?

PRP injections are a treatment option that Dr. Gonzalez-Hernandez offers at his practice for his patients who wish to explore nonsurgical options to treat their upper extremity condition.

PRP is a specially prepared plasma that contains a high concentration of platelets. You may know that the platelets in your blood stop your cuts from bleeding, but these tiny cells also activate the growth factors that initiate the healing of your cut.

For your PRP injections, Dr. Gonzalez-Hernandez takes a sample of blood from your arm. He then spins some of the blood in a centrifuge that separates the platelets from the other components in your blood.

He uses the separated platelets to create your PRP injections.

How do PRP injections work?

Researchers are still investigating how PRP works. However, it’s theorized that the growth factors in PRP stimulate your body’s natural healing process.

Many professional athletes use PRP to heal sports injuries to avoid or delay more invasive treatments like surgery.

In addition to PRP injections, Dr. Gonzalez-Hernandez also offers stem cell and amniotic fluid injections.

Stem cell injections

Your body has its own set of stem cells. These are blank cells that have the ability to transform into specialized cells to heal or replace damaged or diseased cells.

As you get older, the production of stem cells decreases, which may delay your body’s natural healing process. Dr. Gonzalez-Hernandez provides stem cell injections to supply your diseased or damaged tissue with the repair cells needed to support your body’s ability to heal.

Amniotic fluid injections

Amniotic fluid is a source of stem cells that contain growth factors. With amniotic fluid injections, Dr. Gonzalez-Hernandez may be able to stimulate new tissue growth.

Am I a candidate for PRP injections?

Dr. Gonzalez-Hernandez determines if you’re a candidate for PRP injections after a consultation. He may recommend PRP, stem cell, or amniotic fluid injections if you’re searching for a nonsurgical treatment to heal your upper extremity condition.

Conditions that may benefit from the innovative injections include:

  • Tennis elbow
  • Strains and sprains
  • Upper extremity fractures
  • Arthritis

Though PRP injections support your body’s natural healing process, Dr. Gonzalez-Hernandez may only recommend the therapy after trying less invasive treatments, such as activity modification, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medication.

Dr. Gonzalez-Hernandez may also recommend PRP injections to support healing after surgery.
